Monastic Family of Bethlehem, of the Assumption of the Virgin and of Saint Bruno

The Monastic Family of Bethlehem, of the Assumption of the Virgin and of Saint Bruno, responds to the Church’s invitation t begin new foundations.

The vocation to be hidden in the desert far from all human habitations and to refrain from any visible apostolate in the Church does not exempt solitary monks from obeying the commandment of Jesus: “Go out to the whole world…” (Mt 28:19)

Continuing an ancient tradition dating back to the IVth century, each monastic tree without losing its own specific identity and charisma, progressively spreads out its branches wherever the Church calls it.

Since 1950, the Monasteries of Bethlehem, of the Assumption of the Virgin and of Saint Bruno listen attentively to Jesus’ Word and to the Church’s invitations. In response, monasteries have been established in various places throughout the world.
Each newly founded monastery remains linked to the others. The monasteries of both branches receive their cohesion from their respective General Chapters (composed of the priors and prioresses of their monasteries) and from their respective General Prior or Prioress who is invested with the General Chapter’s authority between two assemblies.

At the beginning of the Third Millennium, the Monastic Family of Bethlehem, of the Assumption of the Virgin and of Saint Bruno has more than 500 members:

* In 29 MONASTERIES OF MONASTIC SISTERS in France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Austria, Israel, The United States, Germany, Argentina, Canada, Lithuania, Poland, Chile, Portugal and Cyprus. (The Sisters’ branch was founded in 1950)

* In 4 MONASTERIES OF MONKS in Italy, France, Spain and Israel. (The monk’s branch was founded in 1976)

In response to recent invitations other monasteries will soon be founded.

Contemplative lay members: In 1950, God inspired lay persons with the initial intuition of this monastic Family. Since then groups of lay people wishing to receive this vocation have be formed. They now constitute the COMMUNITY OF CONTEMPLATIVE LAY PERSONS OF BETHLEHEM, OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE VIRGIN AND OF SAINT BRUNO.

They remain in the world in their own state of life and come together in prayer groups at least once a month.

Frequently these groups are established in the vicinity of a monastery of Bethlehem. Groups of secular priests may also be formed close to a monastery.
